Christmas Surprise – Christmas Shadow

After falling and suffering a concussion, I wasn’t sure if I could write a Christmas story this year. SURPRISE!
Newly released, I bring you:

Christmas Shadow
Christmas Shadow
Book One of the Shadow Walker-Lycan Hybrid Second Generation Romance Series

Aleksei Sokolov, a Shadow Walker-Lycan Hybrid, is trying to protect his best friend, Daven McCloud. He installs an Isanti security system in Daven’s Beverly Hills estate and assumes his identity. Stepping into Daven’s shoes puts him directly in the path of a killer, but it also puts him in the path of Sheridan Harbrook, who has been contracted to decorate Daven’s estate for Christmas.
One whiff of her elusive scent and Aleksei thinks he’s found his mate, but where is the Lycan Heartmate Bond? How could he be falling in love with a woman who isn’t his mate?
Sheridan Harbrook is struggling to care for her terminally ill mother and keep her business afloat. She has no time for anything else, let alone love. She’s seen Daven McCloud at parties before and thought him an immature playboy. Despite his reputation, she agrees to decorate his estate for his company’s annual Christmas gala.
When she meets with the man she believes is Daven, she can’t help but be surprised at how different he is when he doesn’t have a starlet on his arm. Feeling that she’s misjudged him, she lets him kiss her goodnight, even though the evening was strictly business.
She likes the man and one kiss tells her she could more than like him. But as their relationship progresses, danger surrounds them both. Will involving herself with a client put her in the crosshairs of a murderer and will this Christmas be her last?

Sweet Sixteen

Happy Valentine’s Day!

As a gift to celebrate the holiday of love, I am bringing you a short story of when the Lycan Volkov twins have their sixteenth birthday party. I hope you enjoy reading how the girls are on the cusp of womanhood.

Sweet Sixteen

Caryn Moya Block

“Sweet Sixteen? What does that even mean?” Katya asked. She lay on the bed in the room she’d shared with her twin sister since the day they were born.

“Mom says it means we are becoming women. She said the saying is ‘sweet sixteen and never been kissed’,” Karina said, sitting in front of the vanity mirror and putting on make-up.

“But we’ve been kissed before. Dedushka kisses us every night.”

“No, silly, kissed by a boy. Like on a date,” Karina sighed.

Katya laughed and rolled onto her side to look at her sister. “No one is left our age to date. Dad sent them all to America or England.” Her heart constricted when she thought of Illarion, her childhood friend. She hadn’t seen him for almost two years now.

“I know, but at least we get to have a party to celebrate becoming women. Babba Yallena is making all our favorite party foods and Uncle Kolya is gathering a band, so we can dance. It should be fun.”

Fun? Maybe. “Will be get presents?” Katya asked.

“It’s our birthday, we always get presents,” Karina said, making a face in the mirror.

Katya rolled back to stare at the ceiling. She hadn’t asked for anything special this year. What would her parents gift her?

“Katya, Karina, dinner!” Their grandmother called from downstairs.

“You better wash off that make-up,” Katya warned. “Dad won’t like it.”

“Mom said she was going to talk to him about it. How can we learn to be women if we can’t wear make-up,” Karina said, her voice rising in tone.

Katya rolled from the bed and headed for the door. Babushka didn’t like dinner to be kept waiting.

“Let’s go, Karina.” She glanced back to see her sister run a brush through her long hair.

“Right behind you.”

Several nights later, Katya daringly put on her fist ever dollop of lip-gloss. She puckered and spread the strawberry flavored goop across her lips before looking in the mirror to check her heavy dark hair hadn’t fallen from the pins holding it up on her head.

“You look beautiful,” Karina said, coming up behind her.

Katya laughed. “I think you might be biased.”

“Not at all, we both know I’m the prettier identical twin.” They both laughed at the old joke.

“I’m not sure about walking over to the meeting hall in these heels,” Katya said, looking down at the pale pink pumps that matched her ice pink dress.

Karina’s outfit was ice blue. They’d tossed a coin and Karina had won the right to pick her dress first. Katya didn’t really mind. She wasn’t sure about this ‘sweet sixteen’ party their mother had insisted they needed to celebrate.

“Dedushka is waiting downstairs with a cart. We don’t need to walk. Are you ready?” Karina asked her eyes sparkling. Her infectious enthusiasm made Katya smiled.

“Yes, let’s go.”

They both walked downstairs to find their grandfather waiting by the door. He bowed low and swept his arm out. “Your carriage awaits, ladies.”

Karina giggled and Katya rolled her eyes, but she smiled. Their family was going all out tonight to make this a special evening. Outside the Alpha’s lodge waited a beautiful open carriage with blue velvet seats waiting to be pulled by two white horses. Flowers and ribbons decorated the back.

“It’s beautiful!” Karina exclaimed.

“Only the best for you, princess,” their grandfather said, opening the door and helping them inside. Then he climbed in front and took up the reins.

The ride lasted less than five minutes, but it was fun waiving at the people along the way. Karina made sure Katya’s wave was properly regal. They pulled up to the meeting hall and their grandfather once more played coachman, helping them down. At the door, their father stood waiting. Katya smiled shyly at the man she loved the best in the whole world. He had dressed in a suit and tie for the occasion. His eyes looked suspiciously damp when he walked over and offered both his arms to his daughters.

“You two look lovely tonight. I can’t believe where the time has gone. Once you were gangly teens, now I see two beautiful women.”

“Thank you, papa,” Katya said, taking his arm. Karina took the other and Dmitry escorted his daughters into the building.

They both gasped when they saw how the meeting hall had been transformed. Paper flowers and streamers decorated the ceiling and festooned down the walls. Tables, filled with food, set against one side. Their uncle’s band sat on a small raised platform on the other side of the room. Someone played a trill on a horn and everyone turned to look at them. Their father stopped near the center of the space and dropped their arms. Their mother, Violet, joined them, kissing both girls before standing proudly next to their father.

“May we present our firstborn daughter, Katya, and her twin sister, Karina. Tonight we celebrate their sixteenth birthday. Join us in wishing them well.”

Everyone in the room clapped and Katya and Karina both curtseyed. The band began a dance tune. Their grandfather walked up and offered Karina his hand leading her onto the dance floor. Dmitry turned to Katya.

“May I have the first dance?”

“Of course, papa.” She placed her hand on his shoulder and her father swept her into a waltz.

Violet encouraged the guests and soon others joined them on the floor. Katya loved dancing and her father smiled and teased her while they glided along. The music was over too soon and they both stopped.

“I think I owe your sister a dance now,” Dmitry said. Katya nodded.

“She would be hurt if you didn’t ask her.”

It was Dmitry’s turn to nod. “Why don’t you try some of the food? Your grandmother made some of your favorite desserts.”

“Don’t worry, I plan to enjoy every morsel,” Katya said, eyeing the tables. Dmitry chuckled and walked away to find Karina.

Katya took several steps when a hand touched her arm. She turned and looked up into bright blue eyes that stared at her with a look that took her breath away.

“Illarion?” she gasped.

“I couldn’t miss your party. May I have this dance?”

Katya couldn’t speak. She was too busy looking at the boy she knew who had turned into a man. He wore a dark blue suit that set off his eyes. His blond hair was cut, but a lock still fell rakishly across his forehead. She nodded her acceptance and he took her into his arms. His scent of the forest on a summer day filled her senses. For a moment a golden light twinkled between them, but then it was gone. Katya’s wolf spirit wiggled in delight inside her.

Illarion smiled and Katya felt her knees weaken. He swept her along in the dance, his hands warm against her, holding her safe. She couldn’t think, she could only feel his nearness and drink him in like she was dying of thirst. When they approached a side entrance, Illarion took her hand and led her outside into the night. The stars twinkled in the sky. He put his arm around her shoulder and held her close as they followed the path into the woods.

“I missed you,” Katya whispered, finally finding her voice again.

“I missed you, too,” Illarion said. He stopped and turned toward her, his arm going from around her shoulders to around her waist.

“I didn’t expect this.” He glanced down her body, his eyes warming her insides. “You’ve become a woman.”

“Have I?” Katya asked. “I don’t feel that different from yesterday.”

Suddenly, she did feel different, her face warmed, her skin tingled. Sweet Sixteen and never been kissed. More than anything she wanted Illarion to kiss her. She licked her lips, tasting the strawberry sweetness. Did Illarion like strawberries?

“You look different. Last I saw you, you were just starting to mature. You still ran around like a tomboy, climbing trees and racing the wind. But now…”

“Now?” Katya asked.

Illarion pulled her closer until she pressed against him. Her hands went to his chest and she rubbed her fingers over the fabric. Illarion stared into her eyes, his gaze thoughtful and serious. Then he began to lower his head. Katya lifted her face wanting, no, needing his lips on hers.

“Katya!” Dmitry said, coming up behind them. Katya jumped in surprise. Illarion let her go, stepping back. “Go back inside. This party is for you and your guests are waiting.”

Katya looked at Illarion and then glanced at her father. He looked upset.

“Yes, papa,” she said.

She forced herself to turn away, when all she wanted to do was stay. Stay and feel these new things Illarion had stirred up inside her. Neither one of the men spoke as they both watched her walk to the building. Illarion looked resigned, while Dmitry stood vibrating in anger.

Katya sighed and stepped into the meeting hall. The party continued like nothing had happened. Everything was the same, but somehow it had lost its luster. Her mother waited at the door.

“Katya, honey,” she said, taking her hand, “come try the Russian tea cakes. You know they’re my favorite.”

Katya brushed at her face and pushed back the need to cry.

“Yes, mama,” she answered, as her mother ushered her to the tables across the room.

“Sweet Sixteen and never been kissed,” Katya murmured. Now, she wished she’d never understood what that meant.

Sneak Peek:

Chapter One

Brenna Ross, Water Witch, focused all her strength and will to make her mouth whisper the word she wanted. Lips press together then tongue to the roof of your mouth.
“Peanut,” she said, with an outpouring of breath.
She began again, pushing against the walls that confined her mind and pulling the trickle of magic that still existed within her body to follow her will. Lips press together then tongue to the roof of your mouth.
“Peanut,” she whispered.
Again, she mustered her strength. Brenna wasn’t going to give up. Now that someone put nullifying cuffs on her wrists and put her body into a trance-like state, the parasitic Marwolaeth possessing her was confined. If only her sister would get the message!
Gabriella must remember Peanut, the little dog they both loved so much. She could still smell his puppy fur. See his loving brown eyes. He was accidently put down, innocent of attacking a small child.
Brenna wanted to shy away from the memory as much as she wanted to forget the Marwolaeth using her to kill her mother’s best friend, Venetia. It wasn’t her fault. She was innocent like Peanut. The Marwolaeth controlled her body. The creature only let her see it happening to increase the agony and horror Brenna already felt. She’d tried to stop her finger on the trigger, but all she could do was watch. Watch as the bullet penetrated and blood spattered. Watch as the beloved old woman sunk to the floor before darkness surrounded Brenna again.
She stopped that train of thought. Guilt and recriminations needed to wait until she was free of the Marwolaeth. The creature fed off her despair and horror of being locked in her own mind.
She concentrated on making her lips and tongue move.
“Peanut.”
Brenna couldn’t open her eyes and could hardly feel her body lying on a cot. But, she heard her sister talking when Gabby visited Brenna’s poor lifeless body.
Again, Brenna made her mouth form the word.
“Peanut.”
Gabby came to visit again today. Brenna heard the Guardian on duty take notice of her saying the word over and over. Gabriella leaned close as Brenna whispered the word.
“Peanut.”
Gabby must get the message, she just has too.
At least the constant pain stopped. The Guardians put her body into a coma, crippling the Marwolaeth’s ability to feed off of Brenna’s magic. Once her magic was gone, her soul would be next. If Brenna could have, she would have shivered.
Her magic grew weaker. She could feel it within her mental prison. Soon, she would die if Gabby didn’t figure out a way to get the parasite out. Brenna sighed in her mind. She didn’t want to die, though some might think she deserved to. She’d done some horrible things while possessed. Really horrible.
She pushed against the walls confining her mind.
“Peanut.”

Marcus Ondine swam down, lower and lower, until the water became icy and dark. He shivered while searching for the lights that marked the entrance to the cave. It was finally time to get back to Earth and his “Destined One”. His heartbeat sped up at the thought. What kind of woman did she grow up to be? He couldn’t wait to find out.
Marcus nodded at the guards and waited for them to allow him entrance. When they hesitated, he flashed the golden medallion he wore around his neck. The first guard jumped and quickly swam out of the way. The second guard frowned and slowly lowered his staff weapon. Marcus made a mental note to speak to someone when he returned about the second guard’s attitude, if he returned.
He swam into the rock cavern and noticed a silvery sheen coming from one of the tunnels. Without pausing he continued swimming down the corridor until he faced a large luminous mirror. Taking a deep breath, he plunged into the light.
The silvery surface parted, coating him in shining light. He blinked, unable to make out anything but a blur as he fell through space. His heartbeat filled his ears and his hands made fists. He gritted his teeth. If the portal wasn’t properly calibrated he could be ripped apart.
After what felt like an eternity, Marcus’s body slammed into reality, jarring his every cell. He moaned and blinked his eyes. He floated inside a white plastic chest. A bubble of air filled the space pushing the lid open. Marcus tumbled out of the contraption and began to swim toward the surface, following the bubble, and heading for the light above.
He called his magic and felt his tail shrink and split, while his whole body grew in size. Up, up, up he surged. The gills on his neck closed and suddenly Marcus didn’t have enough air.
When dark spots started to appear before his eyes, and he feared passing out, he reached the top. The lid to the fish tank fell into his arms as he took breath after breath of fresh air. He glanced down at his naked dripping form, seeing muscular thighs and legs. His normally silvery blue skin turned the color of human flesh.
“Earth,” he sighed.
“Marcus Ondine, what are you doing here and where have you been? It’s been six years since you disappeared. I thought you were dead.”
Marcus smiled at the familiar voice. He turned to see Gabriella Ross, her hands on her hips as she scowled at him while wearing a flannel blue-green pajama set. He glanced around the unfamiliar space, taking in the darkness outside the windows, the large rooms and expensive furniture. Where were they?
“Not dead, missing.” He swiped his hand through his long, brown hair, and pushed the dripping strands from his face. “I needed permission to marry from the council of Aegae. Now, why is my fish tank in this house and not my apartment? Where is Brenna?”

I know a lot of you were wondering what happened to Caryn this year. Here it is June and she hasn’t released a book yet.

The Christmas Cookies

The Volkov Twins and The Christmas Cookies

By Caryn Moya Block

russian-tea-cakes

While snow fell outside coating the ground in a blanket of white, inside the Siberian Alpha’s lodge a different kind of snow fell as Katya, Karina, and Illarion make Christmas cookies for the Alpha and his mate.

Babushka – Grandma, Illarion is going too fast. I can’t keep up with him,” five year old Karina complained glaring at Illarion, the boy who in the future would be her twin sister Katya’s mate. The three of them stood around the table in the kitchen. Karina’s grandmother, Yelena, looked over, but went back to playing with their new baby sister, Vera.

“Me do, me do,” their three year old little brother Rurik demanded as he jumped up and down at the edge of the table. His dark hair fell around his face while his blue eyes begged to be included. Illarion winked at Rurik.

“Rurik,” Yelena called. “Could you get me the diaper bag? Vera needs changing.” The little boy ran to his grandmother across the room.

She whispered something in his ear and he grinned widely before scampering off to find the bag full of diapers.

“You don’t have to be so exacting, Karina. Just roll the cookie in the sugar,” Illarion said, leaning over to plop another ball into the bowl of powdered sugar.

“It has to be evenly coated. You wouldn’t want a cookie only partially covered.” Karina dipped her fingers back into the bowl of sugar and rolled the cookie balls around making sure each one was dusted. “It has to be done properly! Katya, tell him.” Karina looked at her twin sister, hoping for back up.

“Karina,” Katya sighed, “Would you like me to help you with the powdered sugar?” Katya took the sugar covered balls out of the bowl and set them in rows on the cooking sheets.

“No, I can do it. I want to surprise Mom and Dad when they get back. Mom said Russian Tea Cakes are her favorite Christmas cookies.”

Illarion wrinkled his nose. Katya glanced over at him and chuckled.

Karina frowned wondering if they spoke telepathically to each other. It was hard sharing Katya with the older Illarion. He was so irritating at times, acting like he knew better than Karina what her twin was thinking. Katya was her sister.

“What? You don’t like Russian Tea Cakes?” Karina asked.

“I like all the food that comes out of this kitchen, isn’t that right, Yelena?” Illarion asked, walking over to the sink and washing his hands.

Karina looked over and realized that only a few cookies were left to be dusted. Katya pulled over one more cooking sheet and began to fill it.

“Oh, yes, Illarion. You eat everything.” Yelena wrapped the baby back up in a blanket and then kissed Vera on the nose.

“We’re almost done, Babushka. Karina only has six or so to go.” Katya said.

“Leave the trays of cookies, I’ll deal with them after I lay your sister down for her nap.” Both Karina and Katya nodded.

“Katya, I thought of a gift for your parents,” Illarion said, his light blond hair falling across his eyes. He swiped it out of the way. “If, you and Karina want to do it?”

“What?” Karina asked. Did he really have a good idea or was he teasing again?

“I thought I could take your picture on the camera your Mom bought me for my birthday. You could make a nice frame and give the picture to them for Christmas.”

“Wow, that sounds great,” Katya said. “What do you think, Karina? Mom and Dad won’t be home until dark. We could go outside and take a few pictures once you’re done coating the last cookies.”

Karina thought a moment, and then picked up her pace with the dough balls. Mom loved pictures and Dad loved whatever made Mom happy. “Okay. All done,” she said and wiped her hands on a towel. “Let’s go, if it’s all right with you, Babushka?”

“Go. I’ve got my hands full with your little brother and sister. Don’t forget a wrap,” Yelena called after the children running out the back door. She shook her head and ruffled Rurik’s hair. “Don’t worry Rurik, I have a project you can help me with once Vera is asleep.”
